Kodiyathur: History, Culture, and Legacy
“The land where the flag was planted” ("കൊടികുത്തിയ ഊര്") – that is "Kodiyathur." There are no flags that have not been planted here, and no school of thought that is not found here.
Early History and Administration
The Pannikkode amsham (administrative unit), which was under the rule of the local kingdom of Pulavayi, can be considered today’s Kodiyathur Panchayat. William Logan recorded that the local rulers known as the "Pulavayi Nayars" were feudatories of the Zamorin (Samoothiri) and subservient to the Kurumbranad Kings.
Role in Freedom Struggle and Social Movements
This land was a witness to Tippu Sultan’s military campaign (Padyottam). This village's contribution to the struggle against the landlord-feudalistic oppression in the Malayalam land is significant. The memorial stones of 64 martyrs who sacrificed their lives fighting against imperialist and feudal exploitation can still be seen in the courtyard of the Cheruvadi Valiya Juma'at Mosque.
The Malappuram-Thamarassery road, said to be the second major road constructed by Tippu Sultan for his artillery to pass, runs through the heart of this Panchayat.
Demographics and Cultural Foundation
It is believed that the area has been inhabited since ancient times. Over time, the Muslim community settled mainly in the western part, the Hindu community in the central part, and later, the Christian community settled predominantly in the eastern regions. The cultural foundation of this Panchayat is the unity of three civilizations that emerged from this diversity.
Spiritual and Political Significance
This small village witnessed the last speech and final moments of Muhammed Abdur Rahiman Sahib, a national leader, securing it a place on the national political map. It also gained a place on the world religious map through the "Mubahala" (a form of solemn pledge/duel based on truth).
