Educational History

Educational and Social History of Kodiyathur
Kodiyathur is a region that had the opportunity to understand the importance of modern education very early on. The establishment of a primary school here in the year 1900 is the biggest evidence of this. Many students traveled miles, even from areas like Mukkam and Thiruvambadi, to reach this school.

Formal and Religious Education
The New South Elementary School was established during the 1946-1947 period. Students from outside the region (paradesham) even came here to study, as it was one of the few institutions for higher learning.

Kodiyathur's position in the religious knowledge sector was unique. One of the two well-known religious study centers in Malabar was located in Kodiyathur, where 200 students stayed and studied.

During that time of hardship and famine in the locality, individuals like A.M. Avusilan Haji and Nadukandathil Koyamu Haji donated their personal wealth to bear the huge cost of accommodating and educating such a large number of students.

Educational Progress
Due to social and economic reasons, this Muslim-majority Panchayat was unable to achieve significant progress in education in the early days.

The first educational institution in this Panchayat was the Kodiyathur School, established in 1900.

By the 1920s, the Cheruvadi and Pannikkode schools were also established. These schools served as the Panchayat's early formal educational centers.

Subsequently, the New South School was started in South Kodiyathur. An L.P. School was also established in the hilly area of Thottumukkam.

For higher studies, students depended on the high schools in neighboring areas like Vazhakkad, Mukkam, Chendamangallur, Keezhuparamba, and Areekode.

Kodiyathur, which had facilities for non-formal education even at the beginning of the twentieth century, attracted many students from distant places for learning.

The first high school in Kodiyathur Panchayat, the Pookoya Thangal Memorial High School, was established during the 1978-79 period.

Subsequently, the establishment of St. Thomas H.S. in Thottumukkam in 1983 further increased the availability of high school education.
